Juror
Mark Mitsuda grew up in Honolulu Hawaii, and was introduced to glass during high school at Punahou School. Mark went on to art school and graduated with a BFA from Alfred University in 1992. He has studied with numerous glass artists at Pilchuck Glass School and has worked as a studio assistant for Rick Mills at the University of Hawaii. In the mid 90’s he co-founded Glass Design Group, a limited production studio glass studio in upstate New York. In 1998 he returned to Honolulu to teach glassblowing at Punahou School where he is currently the head of the glass program. He has taught at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and has been a resident artist at the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville Tennessee. He currently serves as secretary on the Executive Board of Hawaii Craftsmen and the program chair for Aha Hana Lima. His current body of work explores utilitarian vessels though the lens of Venetian technique and contemporary design.
Juror Statement
As an artist, I strive to create new iconic vessel forms by reinterpreting both traditional and nontraditional shapes. I seek to re-contextualize Venetian glassblowing techniques within a contemporary framework and reinterpret vessels to reflect a contemporary aesthetic.
My current body of work is the reinterpretation of whiskey jugs utilizing the vocabulary of Italian glass technique. I seek to create an elegant form from a utilitarian shape. I enjoy the play (to the point of dysfunction) between implied purpose versus ornamentation. The handle’s size, minuscule proportion, and ornamentation in relationship to the form results in contradiction and implied absurdity and questions the relationship between decoration and it’s origin in function.
